Beloved ‘Star Trek’ Actor Patrick Stewart Dies at Home in Los Angeles

Actor Patrick Stewart, celebrated for his legendary roles in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and all five "X-Men" movies, died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 86.

"We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia," an Oct. 29 Instagram post shared to Stewart's account reads.

"He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayers, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all," the statement continued. "We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace."

A native of Yorkshire, England, Stewart split his time among his homes in California, New York, and the United Kingdom.

In a 2014 discussion with Vanity Fair, he explained that he had always dreamt of moving to the United States, having seen aspirational American homes on screen.

"The movies were my passion when I was a child," he explained, noting that he didn't own a television until he was 26.

"I loved movies about American life. I was growing up in a working-class neighborhood in a very small house, and I loved movies about American homes with green lawns and beautiful, big kitchens, and so it was the glamour of American life as it was portrayed in the movies."

Eventually, it was a film called "On the Waterfront" that introduced Stewart to Red Hook, Brooklyn, a location he'd later live just "a block away from."

"I saw that movies could be about something other than pure escapism and fantasy," he said, noting that the film was "actually about the kind of people" that he was used to spending time around as a child.

Brooklyn was also the place where Stewart met his wife, Sunny Ozell, 47, in 2008.

"She was working as a waitress in a restaurant in Brooklyn," Stewart told People magazine of the chance encounter. "This lovely woman came over and said, 'Gentlemen, on the house, what would you like for desserts?'"

As the pair got to talking, Stewart—who was starring in a Brooklyn Academy of Music production of "Macbeth" at the time—learned Ozell had been hoping to see the show, but was disappointed that the limited run had been sold out before opening.

He gave Ozell his phone number and promised to secure her a ticket.

"And that's what we did," he shared. "And she came backstage afterward, and we had dinner and here we are."

The couple married in 2013, residing in a Park Slope duplex penthouse the actor purchased for $2.5 million the prior year, according to Business Insider.

The 2,176-square-foot home boasted 11-foot ceilings and a converted carriage house.

A year later, Stewart explained that he and Ozell had fully embraced a Brooklyn lifestyle—jokingly citing the amount of kale that they ate at the time and quipping that he was planning on "beginning a campaign" to ban "strollers from sidewalks."

In the same interview, Stewart revealed he was planning to spend "a large part of the summer" in his home in "a very pretty part of the U.K."

Although Stewart would later offload the idyllic Yorkshire Dales home he was referring to in 2016, the decision to reside in two countries was an intentional move to stay connected to his roots.

"I was fearful of losing myself to Hollywood in the way I'd seen other British stage actors do," he told the Yorkshire Post after selling his home. "I wanted a toehold in England, somewhere to come home to."

In 2019, Stewart purchased the former home of "Modern Family" director Jason Winer—a 4,500-square-foot Los Angeles estate he snapped up for $4.3 million, according to Yahoo! Finance.
