A Pristine 1950s John Lautner ‘Time Capsule’ Just Listed for $2.1M—and It’s Had Only One Owner

by Kristine Hansen

Referred to as the Rosemary and Joseph Baldwin Residence, a John Lautner-designed home seeks a new steward in the trendy Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake.

But what’s even more rare is that this three-bedroom, two-bath property spanning 1,679 square feet has had just one owner. With very few updates, it’s a veritable time capsule.

Tucked into a wooded, hillside setting, Lautner balanced the home on posts anchored by shear walls. This creates a floating effect, made even more dramatic with floor-to-ceiling glass and a wraparound deck. That the home is seamlessly integrated into nature, including redwood-plank siding and skylights that coax in nature light, are two other marvels.

“The house is completely original, minus a tree that was growing through the teak deck in the backyard and that needed to be removed,” says Louis Magnano of Modern California House, who is handling the $2,099,999 listing. “It’s about as original as you can get in 2026.”

This includes the entire kitchen as well as lighting fixtures, mahogany paneling, and terrazzo and parquet flooring. As well, the fireplace is original, and all of the windows, too. Each bedroom’s built-ins are also intact. The living room’s inverted-pyramid ceiling and triangular clerestory windows are also striking.

“It’s completely original, which is very rare for these types of homes in L.A.,” says Magnano.

“They get traded (and) things are done to them when they shouldn’t be. This house doesn’t have that. Whoever is going to purchase this home and be the next steward will need to restore and bring it up to today’s standards but while maintaining the original quality of the home. The sellers want to see it restored.”

This could mean updating the systems, for starters.

How often does a Lautner-designed home hop onto the market, though?

“They have been coming up quite frequently for sale in the last few years,” says Magnano, “but there’s so few and far between, maybe it’s just a special time in the marketplace.”

In 1955, Lautner—a Taliesin Fellow under Frank Lloyd Wright during the 1930s—was commissioned by commercial artist James Baldwin and his wife Rosemary to create their family home, utilizing a 7,491-square-foot lot. Rosemary’s sister introduced them to Lautner.

Lautner’s residence (Silvertop) is on the same street as the Baldwin home.

“Silver Lake is really known for a lot of its architectural history, not only by John Lautner, but Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schinder, to name a few starchitects,” says Magnano.

Lautner would later design three other Southern California homes that put him on the map: The Chemosphere (1960), The Sheats-Goldstein Residence (1961-1963) and The Elrod Residence (1968).

“The Baldwin Residence marks a pivotal moment in that career: its siting, spatial progression, and detail recall Wright, even as they reveal Lautner's own emerging voice,” reads the listing, adding that this is “an authentic piece of Los Angeles architectural history and a rare stewardship opportunity that may not come again.”

In addition to the striking interior design, another wow-worthy feature are views of the Hollywood Hills and San Gabriel Mountains.

What will also likely attract buyers is the location. As a haven for artists, it’s similar to the type of community that drew the Baldwins there back in the 1950s.

“Silver Lake has a very rich artist community and it’s vibrant, with young people, and there’s new cafes and a lot of nightlife happening in the area,” says Magnano. “There’s a lot of development happening in Silver Lake and a big restoration project taking place in the reservoir that the city of Los Angeles is getting ready to break ground on soon, to beautify the area.”

The ideal buyer, he says, is “somebody who understands the significance of these historical properties, who wants to restore them and honor them and keep them in the original glory that they all are. It was a family home for the Baldwins. They had three children. It could be a family home (again) but it could be somebody’s second home or ‘home away from home.’”
